Separation of Athletes and Scholars
Years of refining the educational system over the world has led to the creation of two distinct student classes. There are many other types that fit into the educational triage (3 subgroups that students are inserted into depending on their intellectual and academic prowess) but two of these student classes can be spotted in every school, college and university, the Athlete and the Scholar.
The separation of these student classes have led to various topical issues such as Bullying, psychologically lowering self-esteem and etc. but both sides are equally to blame as each side has done a splendid job to bring the other down. Over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year. Majority of these students are Scholars that get bullied by Athletes. There are several reasons for this; mediocre minds since the latter half the 20th century have favored the Scholars over Athletes, stereotypically indicating that students who are better achieving academically reach further in life and have a higher probability of being successful than Athletes who are only physically capable because their intellectual reach is low.
Although there is a certain truth to low probabilities in finding a successful career in Athletics doesn’t mean we are any less intelligent than the person next to us. What most people fail to grasp is that Athletes are just as smart as Scholars; difference is that our field of intelligence is more physically imbedded than intellectually. This is where an Athlete’s self-esteem is lowered; psychologists believe that when an individual’s self-esteem is lowered he subconsciously starts to reduce other people’s self-esteem around him; which is where the bullying issue begins to start. Because of this favoritism Athletes feel threatened and start questioning their meaning and calling in life, this agitates and enforces them to subconsciously succumb to bullying. This doesn’t mean the Scholars are any innocent, minority of the Scholars have a lot of intellectual pride and treat the less intellectually capable with no respect, which drastically affects an individual’s confidence because the individual starts to lose hope for the future.
This problem is not only caused by the students, some of these issues aren’t addressed and tackled by the teachers. 1 in 4 teachers see nothing wrong with bullying and will only intervene 4% of the time, statistically speaking over 160,000 students end up skipping school because of the failure of others, because we fail to empower each other as fellow students, because we’d rather demote than motivate to be the best, because we fail to uplift each other’s spirits.
Mainly this is the great illusion we live by, the separation of an Athlete and a Scholar, seeing as one better than the other leading to one of the biggest issues in school life which is life-changing for most. So this I hope is the time to change all of this and cut all negativity out of school life and society. And no matter what a student chooses to become we are all the same regardless of being an Athlete or a Scholar.
